One
evening in 1991, a window glowed in an artist’s home. Inside,
a bottle of wine was corked with a pop that could be heard around
the province. A conversation ensued and something was born, a
yet heretofore unimagined concept of a Studio Rally. And so, a
weaver and a sculptor nourished it, and it took root, and flourished.
..... And
here we are, at the dawn of a new era for the Studio Rally project.
As the new steward, I have big shoes to fill. Adriane Abbott (the
weaver) co-founder and past principal of this splendid document
produced this successfully for 17 years—in the early years
with the help of her good friend, co-founder (fellow wine lover
and sculptor, come painter-jelly maker -gardener) Beverly
McClare (Annapolis Valley #8).
.....
So here it is, the
project’s 18th year, as I endeavour to retain the status
of this publication as an important document promoting the art
of Nova Scotia, and I’m honoured to be at the helm. In this
province we have a rich cache of world-class talent and with this
map as your guide, we invite you on a unique and pleasurable journey.
There is a culinary harvest tradition in Nova Scotia called Hodge-Podge.
It’s an old-favourite, a recipe requiring the best and freshest
ingredients. When simmered together, they create an indigenous
speciality, a comforting and hearty dish. I know it’s a
dangerous analogy, but having just inherited this project, I feel
it’s a hodge-podge to delight. This year’s studio
map features artists who are the best of the best and the newest
of the new and together they serve an experience that has both
individuality and unity. Further, it is seasoned with galleries,
shops and other attractions. I recommend you jump into the soup…
be the hodge-podge!
.....
So start your engines… mosey along
the back roads of our beautiful province, walk its urban streets,
and revel in your pit-stops. Happy motoring, because these pages,
and the journey they invite, will be nourishment for your soul.
.....
So go for it. Start your engine. Begin your
vacation. Get comfy with this province, push yourself to wander
parts unknown. Celebrate with us the voice we share through our
collective making.
